Professor Stephen Rutherford

Prof. Stephen Rutherford is Director of Undergraduate Education, and Lead of the Education Division, at the School of Biosciences. Prof. Rutherford joined Cardiff University in 2005, from the University of Oxford. In addition to a biology PhD, he has an MA in Education and Doctorate in Education (Ed.D). He is a National Teaching Fellow and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  

Prof. Rutherford’s pedagogic research focuses on the development of Self-Regulated Learning during the transition to university; peer-based learning communities; and peer assessment. Prof. Rutherford has an extensive presentation record at national/international educational conferences, and a publication record of educational research/scholarship. He has a successful record of managing funded educational research and development projects. 

Prof. Rutherford has extensive experience supporting learning and teaching activities of colleagues, leading CPD workshops and programmes in assessment and feedback, technology enhanced education, and teaching innovations. He leads an institutional seminar series on learning and teaching, and has taken leading roles in several institutional enhancement projects. He leads the steering committee for a national Community of Practice for Assessment, ‘INRAP‘. In 2019 he was invited to run a Teaching Process Review and develop a Teaching Excellence Framework for the University of Namibia. He also contributes to the teaching activities of the Council for At Risk Academics. Over the 2019/20 academic year, Prof Rutherford is on secondment to the CESI to develop an institution-wide professional development framework for teaching. Prof Rutherford has the experience and expertise to lead this project, and the core understanding of contemporary issues related to assessment and evaluation methodologies.
